Fox News: Are SSRI Antidepressants Causing School Shootings?

On one had children are told to 'Just Say No to Drugs', then on the other they are encouraged to find the solution to their problems through taking drugs. Maybe it's me.

  1. I think that the therapeutic drugs are a red herring. They are bad because they are delinquent/depressed/emo etc. I think the drugs may well be a marker not a cause.

In addition, the perceived mixed messages are because of a confusion between recreational drugs (drugs) and therapeutic drugs (medicine). I think it's likely the doctors are trying to fix the bad boys taking drugs with medicine.

I shouldn't care really; I'm in no danger of being gunned down.

  2. I don't think the connection can be easily written off as a correlation and not a cause. There seems to be plenty of medical experts expressing concern about the harmful effects antidepressants can have, particularly on children. See my earlier post on the documentary 'Dead Wrong, How Psychiatric Drugs can Kill your Child'.

I understand there is an apparent distinction between recreational and therapeutic drugs, but children (and adults) who abuse 'recreational' drugs are often self medicating. It seems strange to me that the answer to this is not that turning to drugs is inherently a bad way to solve your problems, it's just that you've got to get the right type of drugs that's all. I suppose I am revealing an anti-drug bias here and not providing an alternative solution, I'll attempt to do that in one of my next posts.
