GMO Dangers 'Complete Nonsense'?

An article in the Daily Mail this week reports that the British Environment Secretary, Owen Paterson, is pushing to have genetically modified food grown in the United Kingdom.   Mr. Paterson believes the health concerns surrounding GM are a 'complete nonsense' and that 'Over a trillion meals containing GM food have now been eaten in what is effectively the biggest ever global clinical trial in the history of mankind, without one adverse health report.' He has also referred to critics of GMO as 'Humbugs'.

So there we have it then, what are we all waiting for? Let's get on with enjoying the many benefits of GM crops!
Well, actually, there are some dissenting views. Dissenting views that point to GMO being very dangerous indeed. One of them is Jeffrey Smith, author of 'Seeds of Deception', a book documenting the health dangers of GMO and lies told to cover them up. Here's what the former Environment Minister Michael Meacher had to say about it:

"This is a brilliant book which combines shrewd dissection of the true nature of GM technology, a devastating critique of the health and environmental hazards of GM crops, and scarifying examples of the manipulation of both science and the media by the biotech industry... What is so exciting about this book is that it is no dry text of scientific exegesis—it positively fizzes with the human drama of the cabals and conspiracies behind the scenes... It is meticulously documented and powerfully written, somewhere between a documentary and a thriller."
Michael Meacher, former UK environment minister

Bio-tech companies (primarily Monsanto) have been fighting a propaganda war against the American people for over twenty years, a war to convince them that genetically modified food is safe and the future of agriculture.  Now it's not even possible for American's to know if they're eating GM or not, which is of course the way Monsanto wants it.  I have to admit this is an issue I've never looked into in any great depth, but I intend to become better informed about it as the like of Monsanto aren't going to give up until they've taken over (or perhaps destroyed) the whole world.
Here's a interview with Mr. Smith on Russia Today discussing the dangers and delusions of GM. You see if you think he can be written of as a 'Humbug' or not.
